Hey, I'm a new member, I did a lot of devil sticking from age 12-22, and I've been out of it for the past few years. I just got myself a pair of dube fire stix and have been getting into burning.
I've been questioning how entertaining firesticks can be. It seems that the standard tricks and styles can't compare to poi or staff on fire in terms of audience enjoyment. I've trying to work on tricks that utilize their strengths and make for a unique 'show', and I'm wondering if other people have had/seen success with this.
I think it's possible to show that's just as engaging and beautiful as the poi, staff and the others, but looking on youtube I haven't found anything really eyepopping.

Re: Can fire devil stix ever compete with the othe toys?
Wed, January 28, 2009 - 12:19 PMOf course it is possible to present a fire piece with the Sticks which is just as entertaining as Poi or Staff. Partly, because entertaining has little to do with what you are doing, and partly because it has a lot to do with what you are doing. If you are entertaining then the sticks are just a prop to draw attention in your direction. But if your a sick ass sticks player, people will recognize that and enjoy the show.
My observations with Devil Sticks are that the variety of moves available with the prop are few compared to Flower Sticks. I see most people's work with the Devil Sticks comparable to a Poi spinner who only knows the 3-Beat and some turning, and thinking that spinning it fast is the best way to convey beauty. I disagree that fast is impressive or beautiful. Challenge, aesthetics, flow and creativity create that beauty.
But you will discover how to include the audience in your enjoyment, if that is what you are looking.
